highly accurate flow sensor for controlling respiratory equipment

The challenge:
A sensor for flows up to 300 l/min was required for a medical respirator to synchronise the respirator's operation with the patient's breathing phases. Early detection of the inhaling phase was important. Standard sensors do not provide the resolution and accuracy required for the very low flow values near the zero flow point.

The solution:
Sensortechnics designed a custom solution integrating two measuring elements for different flow ranges into a thermal mass flow sensor. One sensor chip resides in a bypass channel, the other in the main stream. Controlled by a microcontroller, the sensor switches continuously between the different flow ranges.
